Film School and breaking into the film & TV industry.

Planning a career in the film and TV industry has many different choices. It tends to always come down to Film School / Video Production School or experience in the film industry. If you are hoping to get involved in the creative aspect (producer, director, screenwriter, etc) going to film school, enrolling in an internship program at a film studio or landing a job as an assistant to a producer and/or director tends to be the three areas that are most approachable.

Typically speaking, a Film School or a Video Production School only “sharpens” your craft but if you are truly gifted and creative, enrolling for an internship program or getting hired as an assistant is always a great step to starting your career.

Quentin Tarantino began his Hollywood career working at a video store. Kevin Smith, (Clerks) sold his comic book collection to help fund his projects which eventually launched him into the film industry. In other words, innovation and the willingness to do whatever it takes to get your foot in the door is key.

One of the Film industries greatest iconic directors/producers is Steven Spielberg. Spielberg started out as a three-day-a-week unpaid intern for Universal. During the 1970s, 1980s and 1990s, three of his films became the highest grossing films for their time: Jaws, E.T. and Jurassic Park. Because of his internship with his drive and determination, Spielberg was signed onto a long term director deal with Universal in 1968. This deal was a first for the film industry which made Spielberg the youngest director ever signed to a long term deal with a major Hollywood studio for that time. Being an intern was probably more important than attending film school for Spielberg.

There are traditional and legendary film schools and programs at Universities like UCLA or NYU but there are also newer schools that are making a splash like the Los Angeles Film School. The Los Angeles Film School is located on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood located in the historic RCA building. The Los Angeles Film School focuses on film and is the program for the student that is only interested in film. For those students that want to be in the heart of Hollywood and possibly intern at the same time for a Film/TV Studio, The Los Angeles Film School may be the right fit. The Los Angeles Film School Film Program is 48 weeks long and may be the fit for the student that doesn’t want to be in film school for more than a year.
